Priyanka Gandhi Releases 20-Point Chargesheet Against BJP Government in Assam

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has released a 20-point “people’s chargesheet” against the BJP government in Assam, intensifying political tensions ahead of the upcoming state elections. The document outlines a series of allegations, including corruption, economic mismanagement, land allocation controversies, rising crime, and governance failures.

The chargesheet was unveiled in Guwahati during her two-day visit to the state. Priyanka Gandhi stated that the document reflects public concerns and accountability demands directed at the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Among the key allegations is the claim that a parallel economic system, described as a “syndicate raj,” is operating from the state capital. The chargesheet accuses senior officials and associates of accumulating illegal assets and engaging in corrupt practices. It also raises concerns about increasing state debt, describing it as a sign of economic mismanagement.

Land, identity and NRC concerns

The document alleges that indigenous communities have faced evictions while land has been allocated to corporate entities. It further claims that Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, intended to safeguard Assamese identity, has not been implemented.

On the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Priyanka Gandhi alleged that delays in completing the process have created fear and uncertainty among residents. The chargesheet also questioned the expenditure incurred on the NRC exercise, calling for transparency and accountability.

Flood management, employment and tea workers

The Congress leader criticised the government’s handling of Assam’s recurring floods and erosion issues, stating that the state has not secured national disaster status for these long-standing challenges.

The chargesheet also raised employment concerns, alleging insufficient job creation and claiming that filling vacant posts is being presented as new employment opportunities. Additionally, it accused the government of failing to implement the promised daily wage increase for tea garden workers.

Crime, environment and governance issues

The document highlights concerns about rising crimes against women and children, human trafficking, and public safety. It also criticises law enforcement approaches and governance practices, alleging that certain policies have created fear among citizens.

Environmental concerns were also listed, including allegations of illegal mining activities and deforestation. The chargesheet claims that natural resources are being exploited and calls for stronger environmental protections.

Other issues highlighted include drug abuse, urban flooding, waste management challenges, and civic infrastructure shortcomings.

The ruling party has not accepted the allegations and is expected to respond as election campaigning intensifies. Political observers note that the chargesheet reflects the Congress party’s strategy to consolidate voter concerns and frame governance issues ahead of the polls.

With elections approaching, governance performance, economic development, identity issues, and public safety are expected to remain central themes in Assam’s political discourse.
