The Raihan Vadra exhibition controversy intensified on October 23 after Robert Vadra questioned the Bikaner House administration’s decision to remove photographs from his son’s solo exhibition shortly before its opening in New Delhi.
Raihan Vadra, an artist and photographer and the son of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Robert Vadra, was exhibiting his work under the title No Idea Is Final. Robert Vadra described the last-minute intervention as “intimidation” and questioned why objections had not been raised earlier.
He said his son had exhibited at Bikaner House for six years and had submitted a PDF containing the proposed photographs a week before the event. According to Vadra, the administration began raising objections only after preparations were underway and invitations for the preview had been sent.
Vadra questioned why approximately 75 photographs, nearly two-thirds of the exhibition, were marked for removal instead of identifying specific images that allegedly violated the venue’s rules. He also said the family had not been aware of the particular restrictions cited in the booking policy.
Bikaner House Administration Cites Exhibition Policy
The Bikaner House Management Society said certain photographs displayed in No Idea Is Final were inconsistent with its policy and that their removal had been requested. The society added that photographs complying with its policy continued to be displayed.
Raihan said he was informed at around 3.30 pm that the exhibition would be cancelled unless the photographs were removed by 5 pm. He maintained that the proposal and layout had been shared with the management in advance.
The dispute reportedly involved photographs depicting recent protests in Delhi, including images featuring the national flag.
Robert Vadra also questioned why organisers were allegedly asked to vacate the venue by 9 pm, earlier than the closing time he said had been agreed upon. He claimed guests were asked to leave and organisers were warned that the lights would be switched off if they remained.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Supports Her Son
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised the decision, calling it “ridiculous” and accusing the authorities of silencing young voices. She expressed pride in her son and said the move could affect other artists in the future.
Robert Vadra said he remained proud of Raihan and believed his son would find another venue to exhibit his work.
The controversy has raised questions about the scrutiny of exhibition proposals, the implementation of venue policies and the space available for artists to present work addressing contemporary events.
