SM Entertainment Sues X Users Over Malicious Attacks on aespa, RIIZE and NCT WISH

South Korean music powerhouse SM Entertainment has initiated legal action against multiple users on X (formerly Twitter) over malicious online attacks targeting its artists, including aespa, RIIZE and NCT WISH.

In a statement released on January 20, the agency confirmed that it has filed criminal complaints against individuals accused of repeatedly spreading defamatory and harmful content across social media platforms. The move is part of SM Entertainment’s broader efforts in 2026 to safeguard the mental well-being, dignity and legal rights of its performers.

Legal action over defamation and harassment

According to the agency, the identified users allegedly engaged in activities such as spreading false information, defamation, sexual harassment, personal attacks, insults and invasions of privacy. SM Entertainment stated that these actions caused “significant mental distress” to the artists involved.

“To strictly address these acts and protect the rights of our artists, we are proceeding with criminal complaints,” the company said, underlining that it will not tolerate sustained online abuse against its performers.

Complaints filed with investigative authorities

SM Entertainment confirmed that the investigation was supported by fan reports submitted through its official reporting channel, KWANGYA 119, as well as the company’s internal monitoring systems. After reviewing posts, images and account activity, the agency filed complaints against 11 X accounts that were allegedly involved in consistent malicious behaviour.

The legal filings were submitted in collaboration with Shin & Kim (SHIN & KIM LLC), one of South Korea’s prominent law firms. The agency also disclosed that the scope of action will be widened if further violations are detected.

Action beyond X and expanded monitoring

SM Entertainment clarified that its crackdown is not limited to X alone. The label is also gathering evidence related to malicious rumours, sexually explicit posts, mockery, contemptuous content and deepfake material circulating across platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, DC Inside, Naver, Daum Cafe and other online communities.

The company stated that it is preparing additional criminal complaints and civil claims and will continue to expand the scope of legal action against offenders without leniency.

Protecting artists in 2026

Reiterating its stance, SM Entertainment said that protecting artists’ rights will remain a priority throughout 2026. The agency also urged fans to continue reporting abusive content to help strengthen its legal response.

The move places SM Entertainment alongside other major K-pop agencies that have intensified legal action in recent years to combat online harassment, misinformation and privacy violations targeting idols.
