US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on the Supreme Court after it struck down his global tariffs policy, a key pillar of his economic agenda. The ruling has triggered a fresh political and constitutional debate over presidential authority, trade policy, and separation of powers in the United States.
Within hours of the decision, Trump posted multiple messages on his social media platform expressing strong dissatisfaction with the verdict. He described the ruling as “deeply disappointing” and criticised certain justices for lacking the courage to act in the country’s best interest. He also labelled the decision “ridiculous” and “nonsensical.”
In particularly strong remarks, Trump referred to some members of the court as “fools” and “lapdogs,” accusing them of acting in alignment with political opponents and undermining national interests. He thanked dissenting judges while expressing surprise that two justices he had appointed joined the majority opinion.
The Supreme Court struck down Trump’s global tariff framework, which had been implemented under emergency powers. The decision was supported by six justices, with Chief Justice John Roberts authoring the majority opinion.
The court ruled that the president does not have unilateral authority to impose sweeping tariffs under emergency powers laws, stating that the constitutional authority to levy taxes and duties rests with Congress. The judgment invalidated the broad reciprocal tariffs imposed on multiple countries.
However, the ruling does not prevent the administration from imposing tariffs through other statutory mechanisms, which include stricter procedural and legal requirements.
Despite the setback, Trump defended his tariff policy, arguing that it strengthened the US economy, increased revenue, and protected national security interests. He claimed the measures contributed to economic growth and market performance while acting as a deterrent in global conflicts.
Trump also suggested that alternative measures could be implemented to achieve similar policy goals. He maintained that tariffs remain a critical tool for economic protection and national security.
The ruling has intensified debate over executive authority and the limits of presidential power in trade policy. Legal experts note that the decision reinforces congressional authority over taxation and tariffs while clarifying the scope of emergency powers.
Trump further alleged political bias in judicial decisions and accused critics within his party and political opponents of influencing the outcome. He also suggested foreign interests and political movements were attempting to weaken US economic strength.
The decision comes amid ongoing global trade tensions and shifting economic alliances. Analysts say the ruling could reshape future trade negotiations and the administration’s economic strategy.
While the court’s judgment curtails the use of emergency powers for broad tariff measures, it leaves room for targeted trade actions under existing legal frameworks.
As the administration explores alternative strategies, the ruling underscores the constitutional balance between executive action and legislative authority, highlighting the continuing legal and political tensions surrounding trade policy in the United States.
