Two Men Die of Suffocation While Cleaning Septic Tank in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi

Two men lost their lives due to suffocation while cleaning a septic tank in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi district, highlighting the ongoing dangers associated with hazardous sanitation work.

The incident occurred in the Hirapur area near Babalada Road, where the victims entered a septic tank at a residential property on Wednesday morning.

Victims Identified

The deceased have been identified as Shivakumar Nandurkar (51), a resident of Madarasanahalli, and Ratan Hotkar (58), from Indira Nagar.

According to the complaint filed with police, Shivakumar entered the septic tank to clean it. When he failed to come out, Ratan went inside to assist him. Both men became trapped and died of suffocation inside the tank.

Officials said the two had reportedly performed such cleaning work on previous occasions.

Suffocation Risks in Septic Tanks

Septic tanks often contain toxic gases such as methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide. In enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, these gases can quickly lead to unconsciousness and death.

Experts warn that entering such confined spaces without proper protective equipment, oxygen support, and safety protocols can be fatal within minutes.

Police Register Case, Inquiry Underway

Police have registered a case of unnatural death at Ashok Nagar Police Station and initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities are expected to examine whether safety procedures were followed and if any negligence contributed to the deaths.

Ongoing Safety Concerns Around Manual Cleaning

Incidents involving septic tank cleaning continue to raise concerns about worker safety and the need for mechanised sanitation systems. Safety experts stress the importance of protective gear, gas detection equipment, and trained rescue support during such operations.

The tragedy underscores the risks faced by individuals engaged in sanitation work and the urgent need for improved safety measures and awareness to prevent similar incidents.
