Vice President JD Vance warned on Sunday that the longer the stalemate continues, the “deeper” and more “painful” cuts to the federal workforce will become, affecting hundreds of thousands of furloughed employees and public services.
Vance stated that while the Trump administration is prioritizing military pay and preserving some services for low-income Americans, more layoffs are imminent. The Office of Management and Budget has indicated that over 4,000 federal employees could soon be fired due to the ongoing shutdown. Cultural institutions, including Smithsonian museums, research centers, and the National Zoo, have temporarily closed amid funding shortages.
The shutdown began on October 1 after Democrats rejected a short-term funding bill that did not include an extension of federal health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. Negotiations remain stalled, with House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and House Speaker Mike Johnson blaming each other’s party for the impasse.
Labor unions and Democratic lawmakers argue that the pending layoffs are unnecessary and illegal, while Vance insists the administration is balancing priorities between essential services and federal payroll obligations. Thousands of employees across departments such as Education, Treasury, Homeland Security, and HHS face potential layoffs if the shutdown persists.
