Uttar Pradesh Schools Closed Till January 5 as Severe Cold Wave Grips State

All schools across Uttar Pradesh will remain closed till January 5 as the state battles an intense cold wave, with temperatures plunging to record lows in several districts. The decision, announced by Yogi Adityanath, applies to students from primary classes up to Class 12 and covers institutions affiliated with all major boards, including CBSE, ICSE, and state boards.

The move comes amid growing concerns over student safety as biting cold conditions continue to affect large parts of the state. Officials said the closure is a precautionary step to minimise health risks, particularly for children, who are more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed district administrations to remain on high alert and carry out regular field inspections to assess the impact of the cold wave. He stressed that authorities must act promptly to prevent any harm to residents, especially students, elderly people, and those living in open or poorly sheltered conditions.

Measures for students and residents

Alongside school closures, the state government has rolled out a series of emergency measures to protect residents from the harsh winter. District officials have been instructed to ensure the availability of blankets and organise bonfires at key locations to help people cope with the cold.

The Chief Minister has also issued clear instructions that no individual should be forced to sleep outdoors during the cold wave. Night shelters across the state have been directed to remain fully operational, with adequate arrangements for warmth, food and basic facilities. Local authorities have been asked to actively identify people staying in the open and guide them to shelters.

Officials said these steps are aimed at reducing the risk of cold-related illnesses and fatalities, which often rise during prolonged cold spells in northern India.

Schools to resume after January 5

The closure order applies uniformly to government, aided and private schools across Uttar Pradesh. While academic activities will remain suspended during this period, students are expected to resume normal classes from January 6, subject to improvement in weather conditions.

Education department officials said further instructions will be issued if the cold wave persists beyond the announced period. Parents have been advised to ensure children stay indoors, remain adequately clothed and avoid exposure to early morning and late-night cold.

Official vigilance and public advisory

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised that all administrative officers must stay proactive during the cold wave. District magistrates and local officials have been asked to regularly review preparedness, maintain night shelters and ensure uninterrupted supply of essentials such as blankets and fuel for bonfires.

The state government’s response highlights the seriousness of the prevailing weather conditions and its focus on safeguarding public health while ensuring minimal disruption to education.

Residents have been urged to follow official advisories, limit outdoor movement during peak cold hours and make use of government-provided facilities if needed. Authorities said cooperation from the public will be crucial in managing the impact of the cold wave effectively.
