American billionaire Les Wexner, founder of retail giant L Brands, has come under renewed scrutiny following newly released US Justice Department documents related to convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein. In testimony submitted to lawmakers, Wexner said he was “duped” by Epstein and denied any knowledge of his crimes.
The 88-year-old businessman described Epstein as a master manipulator who deceived him for years, stating he trusted the financier but did nothing wrong.
Wexner built one of America’s most influential retail empires, transforming shopping malls through brands such as Victoria's Secret and Abercrombie & Fitch. His business success made him one of the most prominent figures in American retail and philanthropy.
He first met Epstein around 1986 through a business associate, at a time when his companies were expanding rapidly.
Within a few years of their association, Wexner granted Epstein sweeping control over his finances. In 1991, Epstein was given power of attorney, allowing him to manage investments, execute transactions, and purchase property, including land tied to Wexner’s estate in New Albany, Ohio.
Their close financial relationship lasted for years and made Epstein a key figure in Wexner’s financial affairs.
Wexner has stated that he severed ties with Epstein in 2007 after discovering financial misconduct. According to investigative records, Epstein repaid approximately $100 million in 2008, believed to be only a portion of the funds involved.
Although their professional relationship ended, records indicate the two communicated afterward. Wexner maintains that Epstein had already been removed as financial adviser and stripped of account access by that time.
Wexner’s testimony was sought after newly unsealed documents referenced him numerous times due to their long financial relationship. Lawmakers visited his residence for an interview as part of the inquiry.
In his statement, Wexner said he had been “naive, foolish, and gullible” to trust Epstein but insisted he had no knowledge of abuse and never participated in any wrongdoing.
Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre alleged in court filings that she was trafficked to several powerful men, including Wexner. He has denied ever meeting her and denied any involvement in abuse.
Wexner has not been charged with any crimes related to Epstein.
The release of documents has intensified pressure from advocacy groups and survivors. Epstein survivor Maria Farmer said the disclosures support earlier complaints made to federal authorities.
Separately, survivors of abuse by former Ohio State University physician Richard Strauss have cited Wexner’s past association with Epstein while calling for his name to be removed from a campus facility funded through his donations. A judge has also ruled that Wexner can be compelled to testify in related litigation.
Wexner has described himself as a philanthropist committed to ethical conduct and said he is determined to set the record straight amid renewed public attention.
As scrutiny continues, he maintains that his association with Epstein was the result of deception, stating that he was misled by a “con man” and had no knowledge of criminal activities.
