Zohran Mamdani Sworn In as New York City Mayor in Historic Midnight Ceremony

Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the mayor of New York City just after midnight, marking a historic moment as he became the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian origin, and the first Africa-born leader to hold the office.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at a decommissioned City Hall subway station in Manhattan, one of the city’s earliest underground transit sites. Mamdani placed his hand on the Quran while taking the oath and described the moment as the “honour and privilege of a lifetime.”

The ceremony was administered by Letitia James. In his first remarks as mayor, Mamdani highlighted the symbolism of the venue, calling it a reminder of the central role public transport plays in the city’s history and future. He also announced the appointment of Mike Flynn as the city’s new transportation commissioner.

A second, public oath ceremony is scheduled to be held later at City Hall and will be administered by Bernie Sanders, followed by a public celebration on Broadway’s “Canyon of Heroes.”

At 34, Mamdani is among the youngest mayors in New York City’s history. A self-described democratic socialist, he rose to prominence by centring his campaign on affordability in one of the world’s most expensive cities. His agenda includes proposals such as free child care, free bus services, rent freezes for nearly one million households, and a pilot programme for city-run grocery stores.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani. He moved to New York City at the age of seven and became a US citizen in 2018. Prior to becoming mayor, he served as a member of the New York State Assembly, representing a constituency in Queens.

Mamdani assumes office as New York continues its post-pandemic recovery, with crime levels, tourism and employment returning to pre-COVID trends, even as concerns over inflation, housing costs and affordability persist.

He is also expected to navigate a complex relationship with Donald Trump, particularly over immigration and federal funding, as well as address concerns raised by sections of the city’s Jewish community regarding his views on Israel.

As he begins his term, Mamdani is widely seen as one of the most closely watched political figures in the United States, representing a generational and ideological shift in the leadership of America’s largest city.
