10,000 kg Expired Dates Seized, Adulterated Khoya Destroyed in Kanpur Raids

Food safety authorities in Kanpur seized large quantities of expired and adulterated food products during a special enforcement drive conducted across the city. The operation led to the confiscation of nearly 10,000 kg of expired dates and the destruction of adulterated khoya and supari, raising serious concerns about food safety during the festive season.

Officials said the drive aims to protect public health and prevent the circulation of unsafe food products in local markets.

10,000 kg Expired Dates Worth ₹50 Lakh Seized

During the raid, officials recovered approximately 10,000 kg of expired dates from a wholesaler’s premises. The seized stock, valued at nearly ₹50 lakh, was allegedly being repackaged using fake labels and stickers to make it appear fresh before being sold in the market.

Authorities collected nine samples for laboratory testing. Legal action will be initiated against those responsible after the lab reports are received.

Adulterated Khoya and Supari Destroyed

In a separate operation, officials recovered 675 kg of adulterated khoya, which was subsequently destroyed to prevent its distribution. The adulterated dairy product posed potential health risks if consumed.

Authorities also seized and destroyed a consignment of adulterated supari (betel nuts) valued at over ₹2 lakh.

Festive Season Drives Heighten Vigilance

The enforcement drive comes at a time when demand for food items increases due to Ramzan and Holi festivities. Officials warned that some traders attempt to exploit seasonal demand by selling expired or adulterated products for profit.

Food safety teams conducted inspections in multiple areas of the city to prevent such practices.

Public Urged to Check Food Quality

The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration has advised consumers to remain vigilant while purchasing food products. Authorities urged the public to:

  • Check expiry dates carefully

  • Verify packaging quality and labels

  • Avoid products with tampered seals

  • Report suspicious items to authorities

Officials said the enforcement campaign will continue in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to curb food adulteration and ensure public safety.

The crackdown underscores the importance of strict monitoring and consumer awareness to prevent unsafe food from reaching households.
