Air India, IndiGo Suspend Middle East Flights Amid US-Iran Tensions

Major Indian carriers Air India and IndiGo have suspended all flights to and from the Middle East following escalating hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The decision comes amid widespread airspace closures and heightened security concerns across the region.

IndiGo announced that due to evolving airspace restrictions around Iran and neighbouring areas, all its flights to and from Middle Eastern destinations have been cancelled until 0000 hours. Air India also confirmed disruptions after one of its flights en route to Tel Aviv was forced to turn back mid-air because of sudden regional airspace closure.

The suspension follows reports of coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel targeting locations in Iran, including government and military installations in Tehran. Iranian forces have reportedly responded with retaliatory missile strikes, further intensifying the conflict. As tensions rise, multiple countries have closed portions of their airspace as a precautionary measure.

Widespread Aviation Disruptions

The ripple effects have been felt across global aviation networks. SpiceJet stated that some of its flights may be impacted due to airspace closures in Dubai. Delhi Airport also issued an advisory warning passengers that international flights heading westward could experience delays or cancellations.

Several international airlines have taken similar steps. Lufthansa announced suspension of flights to Tel Aviv, Beirut and Amman until March 7. Air France cancelled services to Tel Aviv and Beirut for February 28. Other carriers, including Oman Air and flydubai, have reported temporary suspensions or rerouting due to closed air corridors.

Qatar temporarily halted all air traffic as a precaution, while Russia’s Transport Ministry confirmed that Russian carriers have also suspended flights to Israel and Iran. Erbil Airport in Iraq announced a suspension of all air traffic as well.

Impact on Passengers

Thousands of travellers are likely to be affected by the sudden cancellations. Airlines have advised passengers to check flight status before heading to airports and to contact customer service for rebooking or refund options.

The aviation sector remains highly sensitive to geopolitical instability, particularly in regions that serve as major global transit hubs. The Middle East connects Asia, Europe and Africa through some of the busiest air corridors in the world. Any disruption in this region has immediate global consequences.
