Ajinkya Rahane Slams Selectors: Says India Missed His Experience in Australia Test Series

Veteran Mumbai batter Ajinkya Rahane has launched a strong attack on the Indian selectors, asserting that the national team suffered in Australia due to his absence. Rahane’s comments came after he smashed a remarkable 159 off 303 balls against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy, lifting Mumbai from early trouble to a strong 406/8 by stumps on Day 2.

Speaking with visible frustration, Rahane questioned the selection criteria that kept him out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 squad. India had a forgettable tour Down Under, losing the five-Test series 1–3, despite a promising start with a win in Perth. According to Rahane, the team lacked experience in handling pressure in challenging overseas conditions.

“Age is just a number,” the 37-year-old emphasised. “If a player has experience and passion for Test cricket and is still performing in domestic cricket, he should be considered. It’s not about age — it’s about intent and commitment to red-ball cricket.”

Rahane’s statement reflects the emotional weight of his career journey. In 2020–21, he famously led India to one of their greatest Test triumphs, guiding a severely depleted squad to a historic series win at the Gabba. He has long been credited with instilling belief and stability in India’s middle order during that iconic comeback.

However, since the 2023 World Test Championship Final, Rahane has been out of the Test side despite a decent domestic record. He revealed that the lack of communication from the Indian Cricket Board added to his disappointment.

“After playing so much cricket, I expected better communication. I was fully ready for Australia. But decisions were taken without any discussion,” Rahane said.

Rahane also hinted that senior players deserve more respect, especially when attempting a return to the side:

“I still enjoy the game. My job is to score runs. Selection is their call — but I believe India needed my experience in Australia.”

India’s disastrous tour in 2024–25 triggered turmoil and shock announcements. Major icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket soon after, while Ravichandran Ashwin exited midway through the series, marking the end of an era.

Rahane now hopes his latest marathon knock sends a clear message: he is not done yet.

With domestic cricket offering another opportunity to showcase his resilience, Rahane remains determined to reclaim his Test spot and contribute once again on the world stage.
