Bangladesh BNP Faces Scrutiny After Dhaka Clinic Demolition, Studio Attack

Allegations involving BNP-linked figures in two Dhaka incidents have increased scrutiny of Tarique Rahman’s government, while investigations continue.

Bangladesh BNP has come under increased scrutiny following two separate incidents in Dhaka involving the demolition of a healthcare centre and the vandalism of content creator Salman Muqtadir’s BrownFish Studio. Allegations have linked some local BNP figures to the incidents, although the claims and circumstances are still being investigated.

The Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 was attacked and demolished on September 25. More than 200 people reportedly looted medicines, medical supplies, equipment and other belongings before parts of the facility were destroyed. The centre had provided healthcare, maternal services and vaccinations to disadvantaged families for decades.

Reports subsequently identified several local BNP-linked figures in connection with the incident. BNP reserved-seat MP Ferdousy Ahmed also faced scrutiny over alleged links. She denied involvement, but Prime Minister and BNP chairman Tarique Rahman instructed her to resign, and she subsequently resigned from Parliament.

BrownFish Studio Attack Adds to Pressure

A day later, BrownFish Studio, founded by content creator Salman Muqtadir, was vandalised at the New Gini Properties compound near Dhaka’s ECB Chattar.

Muqtadir initially alleged that extortionists were behind the attack. Police, however, said their preliminary investigation pointed to a land dispute involving New Gini Properties and a retired major general. Several people were detained or arrested as the investigation continued.

The differing accounts have added to the political debate. Muqtadir later alleged BNP activists were involved, while the home minister rejected a blanket BNP-extortion claim and pointed to the land dispute as the preliminary explanation.

Government Faces Calls for Accountability

The two incidents have prompted criticism from opposition figures and rights organisations. Transparency International Bangladesh and the Human Rights Support Society called for investigations and accountability over the attacks.

The BNP and affiliated organisations also dissolved three Dhaka committees and expelled several leaders over allegations of indiscipline and unethical conduct, amid scrutiny surrounding the Radda incident. The party did not explicitly cite the clinic attack in its announcements.

The developments have placed additional attention on Tarique Rahman’s government as investigations continue into the two incidents and the allegations surrounding them.
