Bihar Museum in Patna has earned international recognition after securing ninth place on the World’s 100 Best Museums list for 2026, published by Germany-based independent travel guide Worth a Journey. The achievement places the Indian museum ahead of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and Paris’s Louvre, highlighting Bihar’s rich cultural heritage and growing global appeal.
The museum also ranks first in Asia on the list, bringing fresh attention to Patna as a destination for history, architecture and cultural tourism.
Bihar Museum: A Modern Home for India’s Heritage
Spread across more than 13 acres, Bihar Museum was inaugurated in 2015 and has since become one of Patna’s prominent tourist attractions. Its collection features historical artefacts tracing the region’s past from early civilisations to 1764, alongside traditional, folk and contemporary art.
The museum was designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, a Pritzker Prize laureate, in collaboration with Mumbai-based Opolis Architects.
Its establishment also addressed a practical challenge. Patna Museum, the city’s older institution, held more artefacts than it could adequately display. The newer museum provided additional space to preserve and present Bihar’s history.
Beyond its historical collections, Bihar Museum features a Children’s Gallery exploring subjects such as animals, science, folk art and culture. Its Diaspora Gallery highlights Bihar’s cultural presence beyond the state’s geographical boundaries. Visitors can also sample regional cuisine at the museum’s restaurant.
Museum Timings and Ticket Prices
According to the information provided, the museum’s main galleries are open from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and remain closed on Mondays.
Entry tickets are priced at ₹100 for Indian adults and ₹50 for children. International visitors pay ₹500 for adults and ₹250 for children. Visitors should check the museum’s official website for the latest timings, ticket prices and visitor information.
The museum has previously attracted attention from public figures, including German Ambassador to India Dr Philipp Ackermann, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and actor Manoj Bajpayee, who have praised aspects of its architecture, curation or exhibits.
How Worth a Journey Compiles Its Rankings
Worth a Journey says its rankings use an algorithm analysing millions of data points from venues worldwide. The results are subsequently checked through in-person visits, with findings used to adjust rankings and recalibrate the algorithm.
The top five museums on the 2026 list are Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City, Museo del Prado in Madrid, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
Bihar Museum’s ninth-place finish puts an Indian cultural institution among the world’s leading museums and gives Patna a prominent place on the international museum tourism map.
