Cyclone Arnab has triggered widespread transport disruptions across Andhra Pradesh as the severe cyclonic storm approaches the coast. At least 21 flights were cancelled at Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam airports on Tuesday, while another 15 cancellations were scheduled for Wednesday, affecting services to Chennai, Bengaluru, Kadapa and Delhi.
Airlines affected include IndiGo, Fly91 and Air India. Southern Railway has also cancelled dozens of trains as authorities implement precautionary measures ahead of the storm's expected landfall.
Coastal districts, including Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Konaseema and areas around Vijayawada, have been placed on high alert. Highways have been barricaded in vulnerable locations, while state transport services have been suspended as officials prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions.
IMD Forecasts Storm Surge Along the Coast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a cyclonic storm surge following the expected landfall between Kakinada, Yanam and Konaseema. The approaching system has prompted authorities to strengthen preparedness measures in coastal and low-lying areas.
Residents in vulnerable locations are being moved to designated safe shelters as officials seek to reduce the risk of casualties from flooding, strong winds and other storm-related hazards.
Schools Shut, Power Supply Disconnected
Schools and colleges have been closed for 48 hours as a precautionary measure. Authorities have also disconnected power supplies in certain areas to reduce the risk of electrical accidents during the storm.
The precautionary steps are aimed at protecting residents as weather conditions deteriorate and transport networks face further disruption.
NDRF and SDRF Teams Deployed for Rescue Operations
Multi-agency emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed to support evacuation and rescue operations.
Teams are focusing on vulnerable, low-lying coastal areas, helping move residents to designated shelters and preparing to respond to emergencies.
Travellers have been affected by flight cancellations, railway disruptions and suspended road transport services. Passengers should check directly with airlines and railway authorities for the latest service updates before travelling.
As Cyclone Arnab approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast, authorities are prioritising evacuation, public safety and emergency readiness across the affected districts.
