Delhi University to More Than Double Hostel Capacity to 12,754 Seats

The University of Delhi is planning a major expansion of its hostel infrastructure, with the total number of hostel seats across the university and its affiliated colleges expected to increase to 12,754. The proposed expansion will more than double the current accommodation capacity and comes amid growing concerns over safe and affordable housing for students.

At present, Delhi University has 3,422 hostel seats, while its colleges collectively provide another 3,788 seats. Once ongoing and proposed projects are completed, the university's own hostel capacity is expected to reach 7,344 seats and college hostels to 5,410 seats.

This would result in the addition of 3,922 seats to university-run accommodation and another 1,622 seats across colleges. The expansion programme has been in development for several years, but recent concerns over student safety and protests demanding accountability have increased the focus on accelerating hostel construction.

The need for additional accommodation is particularly important for students who come to Delhi from other parts of the country. With limited hostel availability, many students have to depend on private accommodation, making access to secure and affordable housing a significant concern.

Several new hostel projects are already under construction and are expected to be completed in the coming months. Among them is an Institute of Eminence hostel at the Dhaka Complex, which will provide 1,450 seats and is nearing completion.

A separate 1,000-seat women's hostel, known as Nirbhaya Residential Accommodation, is also being constructed. Another major project is a studio apartment complex with capacity for 1,050 residents. Work on several other hostel facilities is also expected to begin soon.

Delhi University is preparing to submit additional proposals for hostel projects to the government. The university has also asked college principals to review existing residential facilities and ensure that projects already under construction are completed as quickly as possible.

Colleges have further been encouraged to examine the possibility of developing new hostels on their campuses. Institutions with sufficient land and other necessary resources have been asked to prepare proposals after assessing factors such as available space, government schemes and other requirements.

The push to expand hostel capacity has gained additional importance following the recent building collapse at Satya Niketan and subsequent student protests seeking accountability and improved safety standards. The developments have brought renewed attention to the need for secure accommodation and better residential infrastructure for Delhi University students.

Once the ongoing and planned projects are completed, the university expects the combined hostel capacity across Delhi University and its colleges to reach 12,754 seats. The expansion is aimed at easing the shortage of student accommodation while improving access to safer and more affordable residential facilities.
