Tensions between Washington and Europe over Greenland have escalated sharply, with France openly mocking the United States over President Donald Trump’s renewed push to take control of the strategically located Arctic territory under Denmark’s sovereignty.
The unusually blunt exchange followed remarks by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who defended Trump’s fixation on Greenland by framing it as a pre-emptive security move against potential Russian activity in the Arctic. Bessent argued that future threats could force NATO into conflict and claimed that absorbing Greenland into the United States now would prevent instability later.
His remarks, however, triggered a scathing and sarcastic response from France’s foreign ministry, which used its official social media handle to ridicule the logic behind Washington’s argument. In a series of sharply worded posts, France compared the reasoning to absurd pre-emptive acts such as burning down a house to prevent a future fire or crashing a car to avoid a possible accident.
The mocking tone marked a rare moment of public derision between long-standing allies and underlined the growing strain in transatlantic relations. The French response quickly gained traction across diplomatic and political circles, symbolising Europe’s frustration with what it sees as coercive and destabilising tactics by the Trump administration.
France’s position was further reinforced by senior government officials. French Finance Minister Roland Lescure warned that any attempt by the US to seize Greenland would seriously endanger economic and trade relations between Washington and the European Union. He stressed that Greenland is an integral part of a sovereign European nation and that its status should not be subject to pressure or intimidation.
Despite the sharp rhetoric, French leaders also signalled that Europe still values strategic cooperation with the US on shared global priorities, including reducing reliance on China for critical resources such as rare earth minerals. Nevertheless, officials made it clear that alliance does not equate to acquiescence.
The standoff has been further complicated by Trump’s announcement of sweeping tariffs on European imports. The US president recently declared that a 10 per cent tariff would be imposed on goods from several European countries, including Denmark and France, from February 1, with the rate set to rise to 25 per cent from June 1 if no agreement is reached over Greenland. Trump has justified the move by claiming the US has long subsidised European security and is now demanding reciprocity.
French President Emmanuel Macron responded forcefully, stating that threats and intimidation would not influence Europe’s stance — whether on Greenland, Ukraine, or any other global issue. His remarks were echoed in a joint statement by eight European nations, which expressed full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.
In parallel, the EU is actively considering the deployment of its most powerful trade retaliation mechanism, known as the Anti-Coercion Instrument. Often dubbed the “trade bazooka,” the tool would allow the bloc to impose countermeasures against countries attempting to use economic pressure for political leverage.
As diplomatic exchanges grow sharper and economic retaliation looms, the Greenland dispute has evolved into a broader test of unity, power, and influence between the US and Europe — one that threatens to reshape the tone of transatlantic relations in the months ahead.
