Harmanpreet Kaur’s Captaincy Future After India’s Asian Games Gold

Harmanpreet Kaur has led India to another major title, captaining the women's team to a second consecutive Asian Games cricket gold after a 147-run win over Sri Lanka in the final. The victory has once again raised the question of when India should begin its next leadership transition.

Harmanpreet has already overseen some of the most significant moments in Indian women's cricket, including the team's first senior ICC title and the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup triumph. The Asian Games gold adds another major achievement to her captaincy record.

Smriti Mandhana has emerged as the most established potential successor. She has captained India in Harmanpreet's absence and led Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League. Mandhana has also publicly said she is ready to captain India.

India also has a group of younger players who could be developed for future leadership roles. Niki Prasad, who captained India to the 2025 Women's U19 T20 World Cup title, has impressed in domestic cricket, the WPL and India A matches. Vrinda Dinesh and Anushka Sharma are other players being assessed as the squad evolves.

The upcoming home series against Zimbabwe, beginning October 16, could provide an opportunity to test combinations and give younger players greater exposure. With the 2028 T20 World Cup still ahead, India has time to develop its next leadership group.

For Harmanpreet, the latest title provides another natural point to consider the future, while any decision on the captaincy will ultimately depend on her and the team management.
