IPL 2026: Tim Southee Joins KKR as Bowling Coach in Major Support Staff Overhaul

Kolkata Knight Riders have continued their extensive coaching overhaul ahead of IPL 2026, announcing former New Zealand pacer Tim Southee as their new bowling coach. The three-time IPL champions confirmed the appointment on November 14, marking another major shift in their support staff structure.

Southee replaces former India bowling coach Bharat Arun, who was a key part of KKR’s backroom team during their title-winning run in 2024. The franchise has been restructuring its coaching setup throughout the off-season, with Abhishek Nayar recently taking charge as head coach after the exit of Chandrakant Pandit.

Earlier this week, KKR appointed Shane Watson as assistant coach, while Dwayne Bravo will continue his role as mentor. Southee’s addition brings significant international experience to the revamped coaching group.

The 36-year-old is not new to Kolkata’s environment, having represented the Knight Riders across three IPL seasons between 2021 and 2023. His familiarity with the franchise, players, and culture is expected to play a central role in shaping the bowling department.

Reacting to his appointment, Southee said returning to KKR in a new capacity felt like a homecoming.

“KKR has always felt like home to me. It’s a privilege to return as bowling coach. The franchise has a strong culture, incredible fans, and a talented group of players. I’m excited to work with the bowlers and contribute to our goals for IPL 2026.”

KKR CEO Venky Mysore welcomed Southee, highlighting his technical depth and leadership qualities.

“Tim’s experience across formats will be invaluable. His calm approach and cricketing intelligence make him an ideal mentor for our young bowling group.”

Southee, one of New Zealand’s most successful fast bowlers, has over 700 international wickets across Test, ODI, and T20 formats. He recently played in England’s The Hundred competition for Birmingham Phoenix, giving him relevant exposure to modern T20 dynamics—a factor the franchise is expected to leverage.

The Knight Riders now turn their attention to the mini-auction, where the team must identify a new captaincy option. With Ajinkya Rahane unlikely to be retained, leadership remains one of KKR's biggest decisions ahead of the retention deadline on November 15.

The franchise enters IPL 2026 with a reimagined coaching setup, aiming to rebuild momentum and chase a fourth title under a refreshed backroom leadership.
