The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has unveiled an ambitious global expansion plan with the launch of IITM Global, a new initiative designed to transform the institute into the world’s first multinational IIT. The initiative was formally launched on January 2, 2026, by S. Jaishankar at the IIT Madras campus, marking a significant milestone in India’s higher education and research landscape.
Branded as the IITM Global Research Foundation, the programme aims to take IIT Madras’s academic, research and innovation capabilities beyond India’s borders. The vision is to create a global network of campuses, research collaborations and startup ecosystems that operate internationally while remaining deeply connected to India’s innovation pipeline.
Speaking at the launch, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of strong domestic institutions engaging confidently with the world. He said India’s global outlook has always been rooted in cooperation and openness rather than isolation, and institutions like Indian Institute of Technology Madras can play a critical role in strengthening India’s international partnerships. He also underlined the need for clear communication in diplomacy and pointed out that academic institutions can act as bridges between nations.
Referring to IIT Madras’s overseas initiatives, Jaishankar cited the institute’s campus in Tanzania as an example of how Indian educational institutions can contribute to capacity-building abroad while reinforcing India’s global presence. He said such efforts demonstrate how knowledge-driven engagement can benefit both India and partner countries.
The launch of IITM Global also coincided with the beginning of IIT Madras’s Festival Fortnight, a period of public engagement and outreach. As part of this, the institute opened its laboratories and innovation centres to the public during its Open House. The fortnight features Shaastra from January 2 to 6 and Saarang from January 8 to 12, bringing together technology, culture and community participation.
Explaining how IITM Global will operate, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti outlined a four-pronged strategy. This includes taking IIT Madras-developed technologies to international markets, bringing global research projects to India through joint development, enabling IITM-backed startups to expand overseas, and attracting foreign investment into Indian innovation ventures.
In the initial phase, IITM Global will establish a presence in five international locations, including the United States, Dubai, Malaysia and Germany, with plans for further expansion in the coming years. These centres will focus on research collaboration, startup incubation, talent exchange and the real-world application of deep-tech solutions.
As part of the rollout, IIT Madras has signed multiple memorandums of understanding with institutions and organisations across the US, UK, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia and the Middle East. These agreements are aimed at strengthening joint research, entrepreneurship, faculty exchange and industry-linked innovation.
With a strong academic base of over 650 faculty members, nearly 100 advanced laboratories and a well-established startup ecosystem, IIT Madras is positioning IITM Global as a platform to connect Indian innovation with global opportunities, reinforcing its ambition to emerge as a truly multinational institution.
