Over 8,300 Teaching Posts Filled in Central Universities Since 2022, Government Says

India has filled more than 8,320 teaching positions across Central Universities since September 2022, the Ministry of Education informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The latest data shows a significant acceleration in faculty recruitment as institutions work to reduce long-standing vacancies.

Of the total appointments made:

  • 1,129 are from the Scheduled Castes (SC)

  • 551 from the Scheduled Tribes (ST)

  • 1,917 from Other Backward Classes (OBC)

  • 420 from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)

The government said the recruitment momentum reflects steady progress in strengthening the academic workforce across Central Universities.

UGC’s CU-Chayan boosts transparent hiring

To streamline appointments, the University Grants Commission (UGC) launched the CU-Chayan portal in 2023, enabling all Central Universities to publish vacancies, advertisements and applicant updates on a single platform. The UGC has also directed institutions to issue rolling advertisements throughout the year to maintain a steady applicant pool and minimise recruitment delays.

Women representation in faculty roles

As of November 1, Central Universities collectively employ 3,898 women faculty members. Additionally, 46 women are currently serving as ad-hoc or temporary teachers in institutions where regular faculty have not yet been appointed.

Heads of Departments continue to be appointed as per each university’s internal rules on seniority and rotation. The UGC clarified that it does not centrally track how many departments are headed by women.

Faculty shortages persist, but hiring improves

Even as universities attempt to close critical gaps—especially in specialized disciplines—officials say the CU-Chayan system is enhancing transparency and helping institutions hire more efficiently.

Meanwhile, the UGC NET December 2025 application window closed on November 7. The NTA-conducted computer-based exam will take place from December 31, 2025, to January 7, 2026, across 85 subjects.

The government’s updated figures indicate meaningful progress in reducing academic vacancies, marking a step forward in strengthening the higher-education ecosystem.
