Abhishek Pal Gets NADA Notice Over Doping Ahead of Asian Games 2026

Asian Games-bound distance runner Abhishek Pal has been served a notice by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after a banned substance was reportedly detected in his sample, putting his participation in the upcoming Asian Games under a cloud.

Pal is part of India’s 72-member athletics squad for the Asian Games in Japan and is scheduled to compete in the 5000m and 10,000m events. However, no provisional suspension has been imposed on the athlete so far.

According to a source familiar with the development, the banned substance was detected in Pal’s sample in a very small quantity.

“A banned substance has been found in a very small amount in his dope sample and he has been served a notice by the NADA,” the source told PTI.

The substance detected is understood to potentially be a female fertility drug, adding an unusual dimension to the case. Pal is expected to seek an investigation and clarification from NADA as he attempts to resolve the matter before the Asian Games.

“The banned substance is also something surprising. I am sure he will request the NADA for an investigation,” the source said.

With the continental event approaching, Pal’s immediate focus will be on responding to the notice and understanding the circumstances surrounding the finding. His final status for the Asian Games will depend on the outcome of the proceedings.

The doping notice comes after Pal enjoyed a strong domestic season and secured his place in India’s Asian Games squad.

At the National Inter-State Championships in June, Pal won the 10,000m title and finished runner-up in the 5000m. His performances helped him earn selection for both distance events at the Asian Games.

Pal also has international experience. He won a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2023 Asian Championships and has trained in the United States while working towards establishing himself at the international level.

The latest development now leaves his Asian Games campaign uncertain despite his recent form.

Since NADA has not imposed a provisional suspension at this stage, Pal remains able to contest the matter and seek an explanation regarding the substance found in his sample.

DOPING CONCERNS GROW AHEAD OF ASIAN GAMES

Pal’s case comes at a time when doping-related issues involving Indian athletes have attracted increased attention ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Wrestler Mukul Dahiya has already been suspended by NADA, putting his participation in the continental event in doubt. Former Asian Games champion Swapna Barman has also been involved in a doping case despite having announced her retirement.

The developments have added further scrutiny to India’s preparations and anti-doping processes ahead of the Games.

For Pal, however, the immediate priority is to respond to NADA’s notice and seek an early resolution. The outcome of the proceedings will determine whether the distance runner can represent India in the 5000m and 10,000m events in Japan.
