Google-backed Indian space-tech startup Pixxel has raised $100 million in a Series C funding round, marking the largest single funding round secured by a space technology company in India.
The funding round was led by Singapore-based state investor Temasek and UK-based space technology venture firm Seraphim. Existing investors Radical Ventures and growX Ventures also participated, while 360 ONE Asset and IMM Investment joined the round as new investors.
With the latest investment, Pixxel's total funding has reached $195 million.
The record funding round highlights the growing momentum in India's private space sector, which has expanded rapidly since the government opened the space industry to greater private participation.
Founded by Awais Ahmed, Pixxel initially focused on developing hyperspectral satellite technology. Unlike conventional satellite imaging systems, hyperspectral satellites capture information across a much broader range of the electromagnetic spectrum, enabling detailed analysis of the Earth's surface and conditions that may not be visible through standard imagery.
The company has since expanded its operations beyond hyperspectral satellites and is building a broader ecosystem combining satellite technology, sensors and Earth intelligence software.
Pixxel's business is currently centred around three major components: its Honeybee satellite constellation, high-resolution optical imaging satellites and Aurora, an Earth intelligence software platform.
The company aims to integrate data collected through different sensors and satellite systems and convert it into actionable intelligence for governments, industries and institutions.
Rather than focusing only on capturing satellite imagery, Pixxel is working towards building an integrated Earth-observation infrastructure that combines space-based sensors with software and data analysis capabilities.
The fresh $100 million funding will be used to expand the company's sensing capabilities and strengthen its satellite infrastructure.
A major part of the investment is expected to support the expansion of the Honeybee satellite constellation and the development of high-resolution optical imaging satellites.
Pixxel also plans to further strengthen Aurora, its Earth intelligence platform, which is designed to combine information from multiple satellite systems and transform large volumes of Earth-observation data into insights that can support decision-making.
The ability to combine data from different types of sensors could allow governments and industries to gain a more detailed understanding of environmental, geographical and infrastructure-related developments.
Pixxel's latest funding comes at a time when India's private space sector is attracting increasing investor interest. A new generation of Indian space startups is building commercial businesses around satellite technology, Earth observation, launch services and space-based data.
The government's policy changes allowing greater private participation have helped create opportunities for companies looking to develop commercial space capabilities.
For Pixxel, the latest Series C round provides additional financial strength to expand its satellite network, develop new sensing technologies and scale its Earth intelligence software.
With total funding of $195 million, Pixxel is now among the best-funded companies in India's rapidly growing private space ecosystem.
The $100 million Series C investment also signals increasing confidence among global investors in India's ability to build commercially viable space technology companies.
As Pixxel expands its constellation, imaging capabilities and software platform, the company is aiming to create an integrated system capable of turning space-based data into useful intelligence for governments, businesses and institutions around the world.
