Maharashtra FDA Seizes 4,765 Kg Fake Mawa Ahead of Diwali

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has seized 4,765 kg of a mawa-like product valued at around Rs 7.67 lakh from the Shahnur Miya Dargah premises in Sambhajinagar ahead of the festive season. The operation followed a tip-off, and the department said notices would be issued to the supplier and businesses that had ordered the consignment.

FDA officials said the seized product was not genuine mawa but a substitute made using palm oil, vanaspati and sugar. Authorities alleged that such substitutes can be used by manufacturers to prepare sweets that are then sold as genuine mawa-based products at higher margins. The department has warned that inspections of sweet shops in Sambhajinagar and nearby areas will be intensified before Diwali.

The action is part of a wider Maharashtra FDA drive against food safety and hygiene violations. The department recently suspended licences at the Nair Hospital canteen in Mumbai and Olympia Coffee House in Colaba after inspections found multiple alleged hygiene and food-handling violations.

The FDA has also reported licence cancellations involving several food businesses in Mumbai and suspensions affecting restaurants in Pune and Nagpur. During its recent Ganesh festival campaign, the department said it seized 2,813 kg of milk and dairy products valued at Rs 7.38 lakh across Maharashtra.

Officials have warned food businesses that further inspections and regulatory action will continue during the festive season.
