Pakistan Airstrikes Afghanistan Border as Xi Prepares for Trump Summit

Pakistan carried out airstrikes against militant targets along its border with Afghanistan on September 21, while Islamabad simultaneously pursued diplomatic engagement with Iran and faced renewed political tensions at home. Pakistani authorities said the strikes killed 28 militants, including suicide bombers, but Afghan officials and the UN reported that three civilians were killed.

Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also travelled to Tehran for discussions with Iranian officials as Islamabad continued efforts to support dialogue between Iran and the United States. Xi and Trump are expected to discuss China-US relations and wider international issues, with trade and artificial intelligence among the topics under discussion ahead of the summit.

The developments come alongside political activity across South Asia, including preparations for the UN General Assembly. Pakistan is also facing renewed tensions involving supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, with authorities taking measures ahead of a planned protest.

The simultaneous security operations, diplomatic outreach and preparations for the Xi-Trump summit highlight a busy week of regional and international diplomacy, with Pakistan dealing with cross-border security concerns while maintaining engagement on the wider Middle East crisis.
