Mohsin Naqvi Visits Tehran as Pakistan Pushes to Revive US-Iran Talks

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran on September 21 for talks with Iranian officials as Islamabad stepped up efforts to keep diplomatic channels open between Iran and the United States. Naqvi was received by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, with discussions expected to cover bilateral ties and understandings between the two countries.

The visit comes amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran and follows Pakistan’s earlier role in facilitating negotiations. Islamabad has been seeking to revive an interim understanding between the US and Iran, while also addressing wider regional concerns involving energy supplies and major shipping routes. Pakistan has maintained contact with both sides as part of its mediation efforts.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern because of its importance to global energy transportation. Recent data showed a sharp decline in vessel traffic through the waterway, highlighting the impact of the continuing regional conflict on maritime trade.

Naqvi’s Tehran visit is part of broader Pakistani diplomatic engagement with Iran. Qatar is also pursuing mediation efforts, with officials saying discussions are continuing to explore a possible resumption of US-Iran negotiations.

The talks are taking place as fighting and security tensions involving Iran, the Houthis, Saudi Arabia and the United States continue to affect regional stability, energy infrastructure and international shipping routes.
