Passenger Duct-Taped and Zip-Tied After Violent Midair Outburst on American Airlines Flight

A dramatic midair disturbance forced an American Airlines flight travelling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark to divert to Baltimore after a passenger allegedly became violent and was restrained by fellow travellers and crew using duct tape and zip ties.

The incident occurred on American Airlines Flight 618 late Thursday night. According to reports, the unidentified passenger began creating a disturbance around two hours into the journey after shouting at another person seated beside him.

A flight attendant reportedly attempted to calm the passenger, but the situation escalated quickly. The man allegedly shouted racial and anti-gay slurs before becoming physically aggressive towards other passengers.

Reports said he assaulted the passenger sitting next to him and pushed a woman who attempted to intervene. Three male passengers then stepped in to help restrain him as the situation inside the aircraft became increasingly chaotic.

Videos and photographs from the incident showed passengers and crew members struggling to keep the man secured in his seat. He was eventually restrained using duct tape and zip ties, with additional tape reportedly used to prevent him from moving his head.

Retired law enforcement officer Juan Mejia, one of the passengers who intervened, described the sudden escalation as the situation quickly turning from calm to chaos. He said the passenger seated beside the disruptive man appeared to be under physical attack, prompting others on board to take action.

Flight attendants provided duct tape and zip ties to the passengers helping restrain the man. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Baltimore, where law enforcement officers took the passenger into custody after landing.

American Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the diversion was caused by a disruptive passenger. The man was later arrested, while his identity has not yet been publicly disclosed.

The incident highlights another serious case of unruly behaviour aboard a commercial flight, where passengers and crew had to work together to control a violent situation before the aircraft could safely land.
