Vettuvam: Pa Ranjith Brings Traditional Mallakhamba Sport to Cinema

Filmmaker Pa Ranjith has unveiled the first poster of his upcoming Pan-India film Vettuvam, offering a glimpse into a story connected to the traditional Indian sport of Mallakhamba. The poster features performers climbing a vertical Mallakhamba pole, suggesting that the centuries-old discipline could have an important place in the film’s narrative.

Plot details of Vettuvam are currently being kept under wraps. The film marks Pa Ranjith’s first Pan-India project and has generated interest with its focus on a traditional sporting form that is rarely explored in mainstream cinema.

Mallakhamba combines gymnastics and aerial movements with grips and postures performed around a stationary vertical pole. The sport has roots in the Indian subcontinent and is traditionally associated with physical strength, flexibility, balance and coordination.

The makers are scheduled to unveil a major glimpse of Vettuvam on September 18 at noon. The poster was shared with a message describing the film as a world unlike anything previously seen.

The cast includes Sobhita Dhulipala, Kalaiyarasan, Mime Gopi, Guru Somasundaram, Shabeer Kallarakkal, John Vijay, Sai Dheena and several others.

G V Prakash Kumar is composing the music, reuniting with Ranjith after Thangalaan. Roopesh Shaji is the cinematographer, Selva RK is editing, SS Murthi is handling production design and Dhilip Subbarayan is the action choreographer.
