IIT Kanpur to Launch Super-Speciality Medical Degrees Before MBBS

IIT Kanpur is preparing to expand into medical education, with higher medical degrees and super-speciality programmes expected to be introduced before the institute launches an MBBS course. The MBBS programme is likely to take another three to four years, according to the institute’s medical school leadership.

The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is being developed alongside a 500-bed Yadupati Singhania Super-speciality Hospital. The hospital is expected to be inaugurated by the end of 2026 and begin treating patients by March 2027. A separate 50-bed Cancer Care and Research Centre is also under development.

IIT Kanpur has received initial approval to recruit 60 additional faculty members for its clinical medicine and medical research expansion. The institute plans to combine medical training with engineering and interdisciplinary research.

Professor Anil K. Lalwani, appointed dean of the Gangwal School, brings experience in both medicine and engineering, having served at Columbia University as a professor of otolaryngology and mechanical engineering.

The institute’s approach will initially focus on postgraduate and super-speciality education, including DM and MCh programmes, before moving towards undergraduate medical education. IIT Kanpur is also developing research programmes at the intersection of healthcare, engineering and technology.

The expansion comes as other IITs, including IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, are also developing medical education initiatives, reflecting a broader move towards integrating medicine with engineering and technology.
