India celebrated its 77th Republic Day with a grand display of military power, cultural diversity and strategic confidence at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, as prominent global leaders joined the historic ceremony. The presence of international dignitaries underscored India’s growing geopolitical influence and its evolving partnerships amid a shifting global order.
The chief guests at this year’s parade were Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Antonio Costa, President of the European Council. Their participation highlighted the strengthening India–European Union relationship, particularly at a time when both sides are moving closer to finalising a long-pending free trade agreement and expanding cooperation in defence, technology and strategic affairs.
The day began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tribute to fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to honouring its armed forces. President Droupadi Murmu then took the salute at the parade, which unfolded against the backdrop of heightened national security awareness following Operation Sindoor.
A key highlight of the celebrations was the strong emphasis on Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence. Indigenous weapon systems and platforms dominated the military display, signalling India’s reduced dependence on foreign arms. The ceremonial 21-gun salute was fired using the Indian-made 105mm Indian Field Gun, marking a symbolic shift toward domestically developed defence capabilities.
The parade showcased a seamless integration of the Army, Navy and Air Force, reflecting growing jointness among the three services. Air power demonstrations, mechanised columns, and naval contingents together projected a unified and technologically advanced force prepared to safeguard national interests. Tableaus from the armed forces highlighted modern warfare readiness, indigenisation efforts and lessons drawn from recent operations.
Cultural tableaus from states and Union ministries added colour and depth to the spectacle, celebrating India’s diversity while reinforcing themes of innovation, self-reliance and future readiness. Special attention was given to the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram”, linking India’s freedom movement with its present-day aspirations as a global power.
Strategically, the Republic Day parade also carried a broader geopolitical message. Analysts noted that the display of indigenous defence strength and operational readiness served as a signal of deterrence, particularly amid regional tensions and evolving global alliances. References to external challenges, including China’s growing proximity to Pakistan, framed the parade as a statement of India’s resolve and civilisational continuity.
The 77th Republic Day celebrations presented India as a nation confident in its democratic foundations, capable of defending its sovereignty, and prepared to play a larger role on the global stage. With international leaders in attendance and a clear focus on self-reliance and strategic autonomy, the parade reflected India’s journey from a post-colonial state to an emerging global force.
