Indian Mountaineer Subham Chatterjee Conquers Mount Manaslu, Eyes Guinness World Record
Subham Chatterjee, also known as Mountaineer Ronnie, has successfully scaled Mount Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest peak at 8,163 meters above sea level. He reached the summit on September 28, 2025, at 6:18 am, joining an elite group of mountaineers to conquer one of the Himalayas’ most challenging mountains.
Tackling the ‘Death Zone’
Located in Nepal’s Mansiri Himal range, Manaslu is notorious for its 18% fatality rate, making it one of the deadliest Himalayan peaks. The climb from Camp 3 to Camp 4 alone can take over 10 hours, with climbers navigating steep snow slopes and unstable glaciers.
Chatterjee faced a near-fatal avalanche at Camp 3 but credited teamwork and perseverance for his safe ascent.
“It was a moment of sheer terror, but with the right support and teamwork, we made it through,” he said.
On the Path to Guinness World Records
This achievement is another step in Chatterjee’s mission to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. He already holds a place in the World Book of Records, London, for completing the fastest double summit of Oceania’s two highest peaks in just 49 hours, a feat unmatched by any other climber.
Over the years, he has scaled the highest peaks across Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and Antarctica, earning a reputation as one of India’s most promising mountaineers.
The Manaslu expedition was led by renowned mountaineer Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja, famed for climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in record time.
Homecoming in West Bengal
Returning to Hooghly, West Bengal, just in time for Durga Puja, Chatterjee received a warm welcome from locals and fellow climbers. As a member of Climber’s Circle, one of Kolkata’s oldest mountaineering clubs, he hopes his journey inspires young Indians to pursue ambitious goals.
“Mountains teach you resilience and humility. If you keep faith in your training and your team, no summit is too far,” he added.
Chatterjee’s Manaslu climb marks another milestone in India’s mountaineering achievements and highlights his dedication to conquering the world’s toughest peaks.
