Indonesia Floods & Landslides: Death Toll Hits 248, Over 100 Missing Amid Rescue Challenges

Indonesia continues to battle the aftermath of devastating floods, landslides and quake-triggered damage, as rescue teams struggle to reach remote areas cut off by collapsed roads and communication failures. Authorities fear the situation may worsen, with the confirmed death toll rising to 248 and more than 100 people still missing across North and West Sumatra.

On Saturday, the National Disaster Management Agency reported that rescuers recovered more bodies in West Sumatra’s Agam district, while emergency teams are still facing severe challenges due to destroyed bridges, blocked routes, and limited access to heavy machinery.

Monsoon rains over the past week triggered unprecedented river overflows in North Sumatra, sending torrents of water crashing through mountainside villages. Entire neighborhoods were swept away, thousands of homes submerged, and key public infrastructure crippled.

In Central Tapanuli district, one of the worst-hit regions, relief aircraft have been deployed to drop emergency aid as damaged roads prevent ground teams from entering several villages. Communication lines remain down in many parts, further complicating rescue coordination.

The National Disaster Management Agency said nearly 3,000 displaced families have taken shelter in government-run camps as authorities continue search, recovery and relief operations under difficult conditions.

With multiple villages still inaccessible and weather conditions unstable, officials warn that the death toll is likely to climb further.
