Jana Nayagan Delay Triggers Rs 100 Crore Loss, Pushing Tamil Nadu Theatres Into Survival Crisis

The indefinite delay of Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, has plunged Tamil Nadu’s theatrical ecosystem into one of its most severe crises in recent years. What was expected to be a blockbuster Pongal release—and Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film before his transition into full-time politics—has instead left theatre owners grappling with mounting losses and an uncertain future.

Scheduled for a grand release on January 9, Jana Nayagan was viewed by exhibitors as a lifeline after an exceptionally dull November and December in 2025. Single-screen theatres, already under pressure from shrinking footfalls and rising operational costs, had pinned their hopes on the film to revive revenues during the crucial festive window. However, a legal standoff with the Central Board of Film Certification over the issuance of a censor certificate brought the release to a standstill, derailing the entire Pongal box-office cycle.

Trade analysts estimate that the delay has resulted in losses of nearly Rs 100 crore for the Tamil Nadu box office. According to industry observers, Jana Nayagan alone had the potential to collect between Rs 150–200 crore in the state. In its absence, the Pongal season saw muted performance, with only moderate earnings from other releases. While Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi reportedly grossed around Rs 55 crore and a few smaller films added limited revenue, the overall collections fell far short of expectations.

The fallout has been particularly harsh for single-screen theatres. Exhibitors say the delay has disrupted release planning for the next several months, creating a domino effect across the industry. With no major star-driven releases lined up for February and March, theatre owners warn that footfalls could remain low during an already challenging period marked by exam season and the Indian Premier League.

Ruban Mathivanan, owner of GK Cinemas in Chennai, has warned that Kollywood could be heading toward a Bollywood-style consolidation, where single screens gradually shut down and multiplex chains dominate the market. He pointed out that after a prolonged dry spell since late 2025, Jana Nayagan was expected to sustain theatres for at least two to three months. Without it, many exhibitors are now struggling to cover basic operating costs.

Adding to the uncertainty is the political backdrop. With Vijay’s growing political presence and the possibility of the Election Commission of India announcing the Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule, industry insiders fear that the model code of conduct could further restrict the film’s theatrical run, even if it receives clearance soon.

The crisis has also stalled other film releases, as producers hesitate to lock dates without clarity on Jana Nayagan’s arrival. Smaller films are caught in limbo, waiting to avoid a clash with Vijay’s film while theatres remain underutilised.

The situation has exposed the fragility of Tamil cinema’s theatrical model. With OTT platforms shrinking exclusive theatre windows and multiplex chains gaining bargaining power, exhibitors argue that the lack of a stable and predictable release calendar has become a structural problem. Industry voices are now calling for collective action—urging producers, distributors, and exhibitors to coordinate releases, renegotiate OTT terms, and address systemic bottlenecks.

What was meant to be a celebratory farewell for one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars has turned into a cautionary tale. As theatres across Tamil Nadu struggle to stay afloat, the fate of Jana Nayagan has come to symbolise a larger question facing Kollywood: whether the industry can adapt and stabilise before irreversible damage is done.
