Mumbai Police have launched an investigation after a threatening email was received at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) office, while a similar communication was reportedly sent to an American school in the city. The email mentioned veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan and several other prominent celebrities, prompting security checks at the locations.
Police clarified that Amitabh Bachchan was not directly threatened. His name appeared in the email's contents alongside those of other well-known personalities. Authorities are now attempting to identify the sender and determine the circumstances surrounding the messages.
The email also reportedly contained references to an issue concerning Punjab, although further details about that reference have not been disclosed.
Security Checks Conducted at Both Locations
Following the alerts, police and security teams carried out detailed inspections at the BMC premises and the school. Officials said that nothing suspicious was found during the checks.
The investigation is focused on tracing the origin of the threatening communication and establishing who sent it. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the sender's identity or provided further details about the investigation.
The incident has drawn attention because the messages referenced a major civic institution, an educational establishment and several celebrities. However, officials' clarification that Bachchan received no direct threat is an important distinction in the case.
Amitabh Bachchan Returns to Social Media
Neither Bachchan nor his representatives had issued a statement about the incident at the time of the report.
The actor had recently announced a brief break from social media on October 21, explaining that he had been advised to rest and recuperate. On October 23, he returned to posting on X with the short message, “Let's go.”
Bachchan remains one of Hindi cinema's most prominent actors. His recent film appearances include Vettaiyan (2024), the Tamil action drama directed by TJ Gnanavel, in which he appeared alongside Rajinikanth.
He also played Ashwatthama in Nag Ashwin's science-fiction film Kalki 2898 AD. Bachchan has previously expressed interest in returning for its planned sequel, Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2.
The police investigation into the threatening emails is ongoing, with authorities seeking to establish the sender's identity. No suspicious object was found during the reported inspections.
