Mohammed Shami Summoned by Election Commission Over Voter List Discrepancy

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been summoned by the Election Commission of India in connection with a discrepancy found during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The notice has drawn attention as it involves a high-profile sportsperson amid an ongoing nationwide voter list verification exercise.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the Election Commission issued notices to Mohammed Shami and his brother, Mohammed Kaif, after irregularities were detected in their voter enumeration forms. The notices were issued from Kartju Nagar School in Jadavpur, South Kolkata, which is serving as one of the designated centres for the electoral roll revision process. Authorities stated that the discrepancy pertained to a mismatch in details submitted during the enumeration exercise, prompting the poll body to seek clarification.

Shami, who is registered as a voter in the Rashbehari constituency, was unable to appear for the initial hearing scheduled by the Election Commission. At the time, the fast bowler was engaged in professional commitments, representing his team in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot. Election officials acknowledged his unavailability and subsequently rescheduled the hearing to a later date, taking into account his cricketing schedule.

Sources indicated that the matter is procedural in nature and does not imply any wrongdoing at this stage. The Special Intensive Revision exercise is aimed at ensuring accuracy and transparency in electoral rolls by verifying voter details, removing duplications, and correcting inconsistencies. As part of this process, notices are routinely issued to individuals when discrepancies are identified, irrespective of their public profile.

Shami’s case has also highlighted the complexities surrounding voter registration for individuals who live and work across multiple states. While the cricketer is a native of Uttar Pradesh, he has been a long-time resident of West Bengal, where he has been registered as a voter for several years.
