New Year, Same Hunger: Vaibhav Suryavanshi Smashes 63-Ball Hundred Against South Africa

India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi began the New Year in emphatic fashion, smashing a breathtaking 63-ball century against South Africa in the third Youth ODI on Wednesday, January 7. The knock, played at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, marked the 14-year-old’s first hundred of 2026 and his maiden three-figure score on South African soil.

Leading the India Under-19 side, Vaibhav showcased a blend of fearless strokeplay and growing maturity as he dismantled the South African bowling attack. Opening the innings, he stitched together a massive 200-plus partnership with Aaron George, laying a formidable platform for India with relentless pressure from the very start.

Vaibhav reached his hundred in just 63 deliveries, underlining his explosive intent. He eventually scored 127 off 74 balls, peppering the boundary with nine fours and launching 10 towering sixes into the stands. Once he crossed the three-figure mark, the young batter appeared to shift gears effortlessly, pulling bouncers for fun and dominating the pace bowlers with authority.

His innings, however, came to an end in the 26th over when he mistimed a pull shot off right-arm pacer Ntando Soni, getting caught at deep mid-wicket. Despite the applause from South African players, who walked up to congratulate him on his outstanding effort, Vaibhav looked visibly disappointed as he walked back, aware that he had missed a golden opportunity to push on for a double hundred.

Moments later, the teenager acknowledged the cheers from the Indian dressing room with his own version of the popular ‘Pushpa’ celebration, drawing smiles from teammates and fans alike. The celebration capped off yet another statement performance from a player who continues to defy his age.

With this century, Vaibhav achieved a rare milestone, becoming one of the youngest batters to score hundreds in five different countries — India, the UAE, Australia, England, and now South Africa. His ability to adapt quickly to varied conditions has stood out throughout the ongoing series.

Vaibhav’s journey in the series has been one of swift adjustment. He managed only 11 runs in the first ODI on January 3 but bounced back strongly in the second match, blasting 68 off just 24 balls, including 10 sixes, on January 5. In the third ODI, the youngster showed a different dimension to his game, opting for patience and control once he settled in, while still unleashing his trademark power when required.

At the other end, Aaron George played a vital supporting role, adopting a more measured approach. While Vaibhav dominated with brute force, George focused on placement and consistency, eventually bringing up his century in 91 balls. His knock, studded with 16 boundaries, ensured the momentum never dipped.

As India Under-19 look to post a mammoth total, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s latest hundred reinforces his status as one of the brightest young prospects in world cricket. At just 14, his hunger for runs and ability to deliver across conditions continue to set him apart, making 2026 look just as promising as the year gone by.
