The debate over E20 ethanol-blended petrol has intensified after Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that ordinary car owners cannot accurately check their vehicle's fuel efficiency on their own and should instead rely on tests conducted at authorised dealerships.
His remarks come as motorists across India continue to report lower mileage after the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol.
Speaking during an interview with ABP News, Gadkari responded to a journalist who claimed her car's city mileage had dropped from 11 km/litre to 7 km/litre after switching to E20 fuel.
When the journalist said she was relying on the car's dashboard mileage display, Gadkari questioned the accuracy of that method.
He said that vehicle owners cannot accurately determine mileage themselves and that proper fuel-efficiency checks should be carried out using equipment available at manufacturer-authorised dealerships.
The discussion comes shortly after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas acknowledged that E20 petrol may reduce fuel economy in some vehicles.
According to the ministry:
The Centre made E20 petrol mandatory nationwide from April 1 as part of India's ethanol blending programme.
Experts say car owners can estimate fuel efficiency reasonably well, although dashboard readings are not perfectly accurate.
Modern vehicles calculate mileage using:
Dashboard figures generally remain within 2-5% of manual calculations under normal driving conditions.
Automotive experts consider the full-tank method the most reliable real-world test.
The process involves:
This provides a practical estimate of actual fuel efficiency.
Manufacturer-authorised diagnostic tools do more than estimate mileage.
They can examine:
These systems help identify mechanical or electronic issues that may affect fuel consumption.
However, they do not directly calculate real-world mileage under varying traffic and driving conditions.
Fuel economy depends on several factors, including:
Because of these variables, actual mileage often differs from laboratory or manufacturer figures.
The government's ethanol blending programme is designed to:
However, reports of reduced mileage have prompted concerns among consumers and sections of the automobile industry, leading to renewed debate over E20 fuel performance.
Gadkari said accurate fuel-efficiency testing requires manufacturer-authorised diagnostic equipment rather than dashboard readings alone.
The government has acknowledged that E20 petrol may reduce fuel economy by around 3-5% in some vehicles, depending on engine compatibility and driving conditions.
Experts recommend the full-tank method, where drivers divide the distance travelled by the litres of fuel consumed after refilling the tank.
It checks ECU data, engine health, sensors and other components that can influence fuel consumption, helping identify any mechanical issues.
The ethanol blending programme aims to reduce crude oil imports, improve energy security, support farmers and lower vehicle emissions.
