Japanese healthcare company Omron has started full-scale production at its first Indian manufacturing facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Omron India factory will initially manufacture blood pressure monitors for domestic consumers, with the company planning to make it a supply base for international markets in the coming years.
Located at Origins by Mahindra, the facility covers approximately 24,000 square metres and is operated by Omron Healthcare Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd. It currently has five production lines and manufactures three blood pressure monitor series: HEM-7090, HEM-7181 and HEM-7183T.
The company plans to increase the factory's production capacity tenfold by 2028, marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing presence in India.
Three Blood Pressure Monitor Series to Be Made in India
Omron said the Chennai facility uses production technologies and quality-control practices developed at its manufacturing facilities in Japan and Vietnam. The company aims to maintain the same standards of measurement accuracy and product quality across devices manufactured in India and those supplied to international markets.
The three models cater to different consumer requirements. The HEM-7090 is a standard upper-arm blood pressure monitor designed for straightforward home use, including first-time buyers.
The HEM-7181 includes a Trend Indicator and memory function, while the HEM-7183T offers Bluetooth connectivity with the OMRON Connect app and an easy-to-wrap Fit Cuff.
The facility is also expected to contribute to the government's Make in India initiative through local component sourcing, workforce development and employment generation.
Omron Targets Tenfold Capacity Expansion by 2028
The expansion comes amid a growing hypertension burden in India. Omron estimates that around 300 million people in the country are living with the condition, while fewer than five per cent of Indian households regularly use a home blood pressure monitor.
The company aims to improve access to home monitoring devices and encourage early identification of cardiovascular risks through increased local production.
Operating in India since 2010, Omron has worked with healthcare professionals and local partners to raise awareness about hypertension. It has also collaborated with the Indian Society of Hypertension on the country's first home blood pressure monitoring guidelines.
Looking ahead, the company plans to introduce manufacturing of nebulisers at the Chennai facility. These devices are used to deliver medication for respiratory conditions such as asthma.
The planned expansion and additional product manufacturing are expected to strengthen Omron's domestic supply capabilities while supporting its ambition to serve overseas markets from India.
