The MCD life values education initiative aims to make honesty, compassion, discipline and respect for public property part of everyday learning in Delhi's municipal schools. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is exploring ways to teach children responsible behaviour through school activities rather than relying exclusively on textbooks.
The civic body has constituted a five-member expert committee to examine how moral education can be integrated into primary school learning. The proposed initiative, titled Education with Values – The Foundation of a Better Future, seeks to complement academic lessons with character-building and responsible citizenship.
Instead of treating moral education as a separate subject, the plan focuses on incorporating positive values into children's regular school experiences.
Morning Assemblies, Sports and Children's Forums
The proposed approach could use morning assemblies, sports activities, children's forums and other school programmes to encourage positive behaviour.
The values under consideration include honesty, discipline, compassion and social responsibility. Activities may also encourage children to respect elders, help others, protect the environment and take care of public property.
An official said the committee would assess how value-based education is currently being delivered in MCD schools and recommend measures to strengthen the existing approach.
The panel will also suggest appropriate teaching materials, including inspirational stories and accounts of prominent personalities. These examples are expected to help students understand moral values through relatable experiences.
Five-Member Committee to Prepare Recommendations
The expert panel has been assigned the task of preparing recommendations on activities and learning resources that could be introduced in primary schools.
According to officials, the committee will submit its recommendations to MCD Education Committee chairman Yogesh Verma within a month. The proposals will subsequently be discussed with officials before a decision is taken on implementation.
The initiative reflects an effort to expand the role of school education beyond academic performance. By incorporating lessons on empathy, discipline and civic responsibility into everyday activities, the civic body hopes to encourage habits that children can carry into their lives outside school.
However, the plan is still under consideration. The committee's recommendations have not yet been finalised, and the final form of the initiative will depend on the review and subsequent decisions by MCD officials.
