Papa Yaar Review: Zakir Khan’s Emotional Netflix Special

Zakir Khan’s latest Netflix stand-up special, Papa Yaar, places his relationship with his father at the centre of a deeply personal performance. Running for around 1 hour and 18 minutes, the special draws heavily from childhood memories, family experiences and the complicated bond between fathers and sons.

Khan’s father, Ustad Ismail Khan, is a classical sitar player and music teacher who has appeared in the comedian’s earlier work as well. However, Papa Yaar gives that relationship a much larger emotional space, with stories about childhood discipline, teenage adventures, growing up and the difficulty of expressing affection within many Indian families.

The special moves between humour and emotional storytelling as Khan recalls moments involving his father, including childhood incidents, long motorcycle trips with a friend and the awkwardness surrounding expressions of gratitude. He also reflects on how parents gradually realise their children have grown up and how distance changes family relationships when children move to cities for work.

Khan also connects his journey from Indore to performing at Madison Square Garden with his father’s influence and sacrifices. The performance repeatedly returns to the idea that success is rarely achieved alone and is often shaped by family, upbringing and years of support.

While the storytelling and emotional moments are prominent, the comedy sometimes takes a back seat. Papa Yaar feels more like an intimate tribute from a son to his father than a conventional stand-up special designed primarily for laughs.

With Khan having announced a long break from live comedy earlier in 2026, the special also carries a sense of closure. It leaves viewers with nostalgia, reflection and a reminder of the often-unspoken emotions between parents and children.
