Rajasthan ULB Polls: Did UGC Rollback Campaign Hurt BJP? Karni Sena Claims Impact

The Rajasthan urban local body election results have triggered a political debate over the role of independent candidates and whether the Shri Rajput Karni Sena's campaign against the UGC Regulations 2026 influenced the outcome.

Karni Sena president Mahipal Singh Makrana claimed that around 70% of the winning independent candidates were supported by the organisation because they backed the demand to withdraw the UGC regulations. He described the performance of independents as “historic” and claimed they won between 20% and 25% of wards across Rajasthan.

The organisation had called for a boycott of both the BJP and Congress during the urban local body elections. It asked voters to support independent candidates who provided written commitments favouring the rollback of the UGC Regulations 2026.

Makrana said the Karni Sena's Swarna Nyay Manch had supported more than 1,500 independent candidates during the campaign. He pointed to the Makrana Municipal Council, where independent candidates won 36 of the 60 wards, as an example of the campaign's impact. He also attributed the BJP's setback in Bikaner to the organisation's efforts.

The BJP, however, rejected the suggestion that the results could be directly linked to the Karni Sena campaign. BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bhardwaj said independent candidates have traditionally played a significant role in local body elections and that similar results had been seen in previous polls.

The results have nevertheless renewed discussion over whether issues such as university regulations, reservation reforms and grassroots mobilisation can influence the BJP's electoral prospects beyond traditional party politics.
