UCC Push Sparks NDA Differences: JD(U), LJP Seek Consultation Before Final Stand

The Centre’s plan to pursue a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across 21 NDA-ruled states by 2029 has exposed differences within the ruling alliance, with key Bihar partners seeking greater consultation before taking a final position.

Janata Dal (United) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leaders have called for the proposed UCC draft to be made public and discussed with stakeholders. The allies have stressed the need to ensure that the legislation does not hurt the sentiments of any community.

The development has given the opposition an opportunity to question the NDA partners over their position on the proposed reforms. Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav has asked the alliance partners to make their respective positions clear on the UCC.

The proposed framework seeks to establish common personal laws in areas governed by different religious practices. Among the key provisions under discussion are a complete prohibition on polygamy, a uniform minimum marriage age and mandatory registration of live-in relationships.

The framework also proposes gender-equal inheritance rights, aiming to bring greater uniformity to personal laws governing marriage, family relationships and succession.

Scheduled Tribes have been kept outside the proposed UCC framework, according to the provisions outlined in the plan.

The Centre’s push has therefore created a political challenge within the NDA, particularly among allies that have sought wider consultations before supporting the proposed changes. The debate is expected to remain significant as discussions continue over the scope and implementation of the UCC.
