₹5.16 Crore Toll Refund Announced After Mumbai–Pune Expressway Jam

More than one lakh motorists stranded in a massive traffic gridlock on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway earlier this month will receive toll refunds totaling ₹5.16 crore. The decision comes after a gas tanker accident caused a 33-hour disruption, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving commuters stranded for hours.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed that refunds will be processed and credited directly to FASTag accounts of affected vehicle owners.

Tanker Accident Triggered 33-Hour Traffic Nightmare

On February 3, a gas tanker overturned on the Khopoli stretch of the expressway, leading to severe congestion stretching several kilometres. The prolonged disruption left motorists and passengers struggling with shortages of water, food, and basic amenities.

Authorities ordered an immediate suspension of toll collection following the incident. However, toll charges had already been deducted from many FASTag accounts before the suspension took effect.

FASTag Refunds to Be Credited Automatically

Officials said the refund will include all toll amounts collected after the order to halt toll collection was issued. The toll operator has been instructed to submit detailed FASTag transaction data to ensure accurate reimbursement.

Some toll deductions were processed automatically before toll plaza barriers were fully opened. Authorities are reviewing these transactions and will refund all eligible amounts.

Refunds will be credited directly to motorists’ FASTag wallets in the coming days.

Relief for Affected Commuters

The refund decision provides relief to thousands of commuters who faced significant inconvenience during the prolonged traffic standstill. The expressway is one of India’s busiest corridors, connecting Mumbai and Pune and handling heavy daily traffic.

The incident highlighted the importance of rapid traffic management and emergency response systems on high-density highways.

Focus on Improved Emergency Response

Officials are expected to review response mechanisms and coordination protocols to prevent similar disruptions in the future. Enhancing incident management systems and communication strategies could help minimise commuter hardship during emergencies.

The refund initiative aims to compensate affected motorists while reinforcing accountability in toll operations during crisis situations.
