Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman has addressed recent criticism surrounding his comments on the Hindi film music industry and generational expectations, saying that persistent comparisons with his early work made him momentarily doubt his creative relevance. Rahman’s remarks have sparked widespread discussion across social media and within the film fraternity, prompting the composer to offer a detailed clarification.
Speaking in multiple interviews, Rahman reflected on how audiences from different generations perceive his music. He noted that while listeners from the 1990s often associate him with iconic soundtracks from that era, younger listeners tend to measure his current work against those milestones. According to Rahman, such constant nostalgia-driven comparisons can be mentally taxing and, at times, “gaslighting,” as they subtly suggest that his recent compositions are less impactful.
Rahman emphasised that contrary to perceptions of reduced output, he has remained consistently active in recent years. Between 2019 and 2025, he said he composed music for nearly 20 to 30 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam cinema. His recent body of work includes high-profile projects such as Ponniyin Selvan: I, Ponniyin Selvan: II, and Thug Life, reflecting a deliberate effort to stay relevant for newer audiences.
The composer explained that his recent approach has been intentional. Rather than relying on past acclaim, he chose to immerse himself in continuous work so that newer generations would associate him with contemporary soundtracks rather than only his early classics. Rahman said that this strategy has helped restore his confidence, as directors now frequently reference his recent compositions when approaching him for new projects.
Rahman also spoke candidly about the burden of legacy. He said that constantly being reminded of past awards and achievements, including multiple Filmfare honours and international recognition, can be creatively draining. For him, 2026 represents a symbolic reset — a phase where he wants to move forward without leaning on past accolades and instead focus on artistic growth and reinvention.
The controversy intensified after Rahman remarked in an earlier interview that changing power structures in the Hindi film industry over the past several years may have influenced the kind of work coming his way, hinting that non-creative decision-makers now play a larger role. He also suggested that these shifts may have occasionally carried communal undertones, though not expressed directly. These comments drew mixed reactions, with some interpreting them as a broader critique of industry dynamics.
In response to the backlash, Rahman released a video message clarifying his intent. He stressed that his comments were not meant to hurt sentiments or target any group. Describing India as his creative foundation and inspiration, Rahman said his only aim has been to unite people through music and celebrate cultural diversity.
Reaffirming his commitment to his craft, Rahman said he remains focused on creating meaningful music for the future. While debates around his remarks continue, the composer made it clear that he views this phase as an opportunity for renewal rather than retreat, determined to let his work — past and present — speak for itself.
