Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026: Royal Swedish Academy Set to Announce Winner Today

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced in Stockholm on Wednesday, marking the third science prize of this year’s Nobel Week.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will announce the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in Stockholm.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 will be announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on Wednesday, October 7. The announcement is expected at around 3:15 pm IST at the earliest, bringing attention to the third science category of this year’s Nobel Week after the medicine and physics prizes.

The Chemistry Nobel is particularly closely connected to Alfred Nobel, whose inventions, industrial work and scientific interests were deeply linked to chemistry.

Chemistry Nobel Follows Medicine and Physics Awards

The Chemistry announcement follows two major scientific recognitions earlier this week.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discoveries involving light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, a technique that allows scientists to control specific nerve cells using light.

On Tuesday, the Physics Nobel went to Francis Halzen for his contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

The IceCube facility uses a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice to detect extremely rare neutrino interactions, providing a new way to study violent events in the universe.

Why Chemistry Has a Special Link to Alfred Nobel

Chemistry was the second prize field mentioned in Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, after Physics.

Nobel was an inventor, entrepreneur and industrialist whose work relied heavily on chemical knowledge. His inventions and industrial processes were closely connected to chemistry, making the field a natural part of the Nobel Prize system.

Since 1901, the Chemistry Nobel has been awarded 117 times to 200 laureates, recognising discoveries involving molecular structures, biological processes, catalysts, materials and technologies.

Few Women Have Won the Chemistry Nobel

Women remain underrepresented among Chemistry Nobel laureates. Only eight women have received the prize so far.

The youngest Chemistry laureate was Frédéric Joliot, who was 35 when he won in 1935. The oldest was John B. Goodenough, who received the prize at the age of 97 in 2019.

The identities of nominees remain confidential for 50 years, meaning names circulating ahead of the announcement are speculation rather than official shortlists.
