BAFTA 2026 Pays Emotional Tribute to Dharmendra in In Memoriam Segment

Indian cinema received a poignant moment of global recognition at the 79th British Academy Film Awards when legendary actor Dharmendra was honoured in the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment. Held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, the tribute commemorated prominent film personalities who passed away over the past year, with Dharmendra’s inclusion resonating deeply with audiences in India and across the world.

The emotional montage unfolded alongside a live performance by Jessie Ware, who sang The Way We Were as images of departed cinematic icons appeared on screen. Dharmendra was remembered alongside internationally recognised figures such as Diane Keaton, Terence Stamp and Val Kilmer, underscoring the global scale of his legacy.

The tribute segment also featured several late film personalities from across industries, reflecting the global impact of cinema. For Indian viewers, Dharmendra’s presence in the montage symbolised international acknowledgement of his enduring contribution to filmmaking and popular culture.

A legendary career spanning six decades

Born in Ludhiana in 1935, Dharmendra began his film journey with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960. Early acclaim followed with notable roles in Bandini, Ayee Milan Ki Bela and Khamoshi. His breakthrough came with the 1966 blockbuster Phool Aur Patthar, which established him as one of Hindi cinema’s leading stars.

Over more than six decades, he delivered memorable performances in classics including Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Sholay and Yaadon Ki Baraat. Known as the “He-Man of India,” Dharmendra combined action hero charisma with emotional depth, making him one of the most versatile actors of his era.

Bridging generations and lasting influence

Dharmendra remained relevant across generations, later sharing screen space with his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol in Apne and the Yamla Pagla Deewana series. His final film appearance came in Ikkis, released in January 2025.

The actor passed away on November 24, 2025, following a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wives Prakash Kaur and Hema Malini, and his children, including actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Esha Deol. He was posthumously honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in recognition of his immense contribution to Indian cinema.
