Bangladesh lynching: Indian celebs condemn killing of Dipu Chandra Das

Indian celebrities have voiced strong condemnation after Dipu Chandra Das, a 30-year-old Hindu garment factory worker, was lynched by a mob in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district earlier this month. The killing, in which the victim’s body was reportedly tied to a tree and set on fire, has triggered widespread concern over the safety of minorities in the country.

Actors, musicians and filmmakers from India used their platforms to express solidarity with the Hindu community in Bangladesh and to demand accountability. The incident occurred amid heightened political tension in Bangladesh ahead of elections, adding to anxieties around communal violence.

Actor Kajal Aggarwal shared a poster reading “All eyes on Bangladesh Hindus,” calling attention to the issue and urging unity. The message resonated widely on social media as discussions around minority safety intensified.

Veteran actor and former MP Jaya Prada released a video message expressing anguish over the killing. She described the incident as mob lynching and appealed for collective voices to be raised against violence targeting religious minorities, calling for justice and humanitarian support.

Actor Manoj Joshi also reacted, questioning what he described as selective outrage in global responses to violence, and said the killing deserved greater international attention.

Singer Tony Kakkar referenced the incident in his song Chaar Log, using lyrics to question violence carried out on religious lines and to call for compassion and accountability.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit publicly thanked Janhvi Kapoor for condemning the killing, praising her for speaking out despite online backlash. He described her stance as one taken in the interest of humanity.

Bangladeshi authorities have said that 12 people have been arrested in connection with the killing. The interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus has termed the incident isolated, while police have stated that there is no evidence supporting allegations of blasphemy against the victim. Minority groups, however, continue to express concern amid reports of rising communal tension.
