Bhubaneswar Rooftop Blast Kills Two, NIA Probes Illegal Explosives Angle

CCTV footage of a powerful explosion that rocked Bhubaneswar’s Sundarpada area has surfaced, revealing the intensity of the blast that left four people critically injured. Two of the injured later died during treatment, raising serious concerns about illegal explosive handling in a residential neighbourhood.

The explosion occurred on January 27 on the rooftop of a residential building and sent shockwaves through the surrounding area. Residents rushed out of their homes after hearing a loud blast, while thick smoke and flames were seen rising from the building.

CCTV Footage Reveals Blast Impact

The footage shows a sudden burst of flames erupting from behind rooftop water tanks, followed by dense smoke engulfing the structure. The force of the explosion triggered panic across the locality, with bystanders gathering in alarm as debris and shockwaves spread through the neighbourhood.

Police said four individuals sustained severe injuries and were initially treated at Capital Hospital before being shifted to a private medical facility. A woman and her son later succumbed to their injuries.

Illegal Bomb-Making Angle Under Investigation

Investigators suspect the blast occurred while explosive materials were being handled on the rooftop. Gunpowder recovered from the site has strengthened suspicions that crude explosive devices were being assembled.

Police identified Shahnawaz Malik as the prime accused in the case. Preliminary findings suggest he, along with associates including a family member, may have been involved in manufacturing explosive devices at the residence.

Officials indicated that the main injured individual had a prior criminal record, and authorities believe the explosives may have been intended for criminal activity. Searches are being conducted to determine whether additional explosive materials were stored at the site.

National Investigation Agency Takes Over Probe

Given the seriousness of the incident, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation. A Special Investigation Team had initially been formed by local police before the central agency assumed control.

Authorities are analysing CCTV footage and forensic evidence to determine the exact cause of the explosion and whether a wider network or conspiracy is involved.

Security has been tightened in Sundarpada and surrounding areas as investigators continue their probe.

Safety Concerns in Residential Areas

The incident has raised concerns about the illegal handling of explosives in densely populated neighbourhoods. Experts stress the need for community vigilance and strict enforcement to prevent dangerous activities in residential zones.

Officials have urged residents to report suspicious activities and materials to authorities to ensure public safety.

As investigations continue, the Bhubaneswar blast underscores the severe risks posed by unlawful explosive handling and the importance of swift law enforcement response.
