Delhi University has allowed three more colleges to admit students to selected undergraduate courses based on Class 12 marks after seats remained vacant despite the regular CUET-based admission process.
Shyam Lal College, Rajdhani College and Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening) have opened applications for specific UG programmes under the special merit-based admission process.
The move follows a similar exception granted earlier to Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Bhagini Nivedita College, highlighting the continued challenge of filling vacant seats in some Delhi University colleges.

Why is DU allowing Class 12-based admissions?
Delhi University's regular undergraduate admission process is primarily based on CUET scores through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS).
However, several seats remained vacant even after the CUET-based admission rounds. Instead of leaving these seats unfilled, DU has allowed certain colleges to admit eligible students based on their Class 12 marks.
The latest decision follows an earlier exception granted to Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Bhagini Nivedita College, which were also permitted to fill vacant UG seats through a merit-based process.
The measure appears to be aimed primarily at colleges and courses that continue to face difficulties in filling available seats.
Concerns over fairness in the admission process
While the decision offers another opportunity for students who were unable to secure admission through CUET, it has also triggered questions about consistency in Delhi University's admission policy.
CUET remains the standard route for undergraduate admissions at DU. Allowing some colleges to use Class 12 marks as an alternative route has led to concerns about whether this could create a parallel admission mechanism.
A section of teachers had raised similar objections when the first two colleges were allowed to conduct Class 12 merit-based admissions.
The university, however, has treated the move as a special measure to fill vacant seats rather than a replacement for the CUET-based admission system.
What students should keep in mind
Students interested in applying should carefully check the eligibility criteria, required documents and admission rules of the respective colleges.
Key deadlines:
-
Shyam Lal College: Applications open until August 21
-
Zakir Husain Delhi College (Evening): Applications open until August 23
-
Rajdhani College: Applications open until August 24, 5 pm
These admissions are being conducted specifically to fill vacant seats and do not replace Delhi University's regular CUET-based UG admission process.
The expansion of the Class 12 merit route to three additional colleges shows that vacant seats remain a challenge at some DU institutions, particularly for selected off-campus colleges and courses.
