Indian Man Arrested After Shooting Wife, 3 Relatives Dead in US; Children Hide in Closet

An Indian-origin man has been arrested in the United States after a fatal shooting inside a family residence left four adults dead, including his wife. Authorities said the incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute, while three children present in the house survived by hiding in a closet.

The accused has been identified as Vijay Kumar, 51. Police confirmed that the victims include his wife Meemu Dogra, 43, along with three relatives — Gourav Cumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37), and Harish Chander (38).

The shooting was reported in the early hours of Friday, shortly after 2.30 am, at a residence located on Brook Ivy Court in Georgia, near Atlanta. Responding officers found all four adults inside the house with fatal gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, Kumar’s vehicle was still parked in the driveway when police arrived, raising concerns that the suspect might still be nearby. K-9 units were deployed to search the surrounding area, and a police dog later tracked Kumar to a wooded area close to the residence, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

Authorities revealed that three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting, including Kumar and Dogra’s 12-year-old child. The children reportedly hid in a closet during the violence and were not physically harmed. Officials said it was the 12-year-old who called emergency services and provided critical information that enabled police to respond swiftly.

The other two minors present in the house are aged seven and ten. All three children have since been placed in the care of a family member, officials said.

Preliminary findings suggest that an argument between Kumar and Dogra began at their Atlanta home earlier in the night. The couple later travelled with their child to the Brook Ivy Court residence, where the other victims lived. Investigators believe the confrontation escalated there, leading to the fatal shooting.

Police have described the case as a domestic violence-related incident and said the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and motive. Kumar remains in custody and is expected to face multiple serious charges, including murder.

The Indian Consulate in Atlanta acknowledged the incident and said it is providing assistance to the affected family. In a statement, the mission expressed deep grief over the tragedy and confirmed that it is coordinating with local authorities while extending all possible support to the bereaved relatives.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local Indian community, highlighting ongoing concerns around domestic violence and gun-related crimes in the United States. Authorities said further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
